The Department of Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy has an outstanding opportunity for a highly-motivated Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE). Under the guidance of the Lab Manager and Principal Investigator, the Research Scientist/Engineer I will be responsible for performing specialized lab tests to assess pharmacokinetics of investigational agents in rodent models of neurological disease, in vivo pharmacology experiments and basic biomolecular assays for investigational studies for preclinical neurotherapeutic drug development. While this position will generally follow established standard operating procedures of the research laboratory, the incumbent should be highly flexible and work well in a dynamic research environment. Strong attention to detail is required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare biological samples for mass spectrometry, perform mass spectrometry analyses and interpret the results - 40%.

  • Assists the Principal Investigator in the implementation and performance of experimental protocols and procedures, as well as the modification of existing techniques for the collection of bioanalytical data across multiple tissue matrices in rodents – 20%.

  • Operates complex and highly specialized laboratory and surgical instruments and equipment in support of research activities for drug development; may instructs others in their use – 20%.

  • Reviews scientific journals, abstracts and other literature concerning experimental procedures, confers with Principal Investigators concerning implementation of experimental procedures – 5%.

  • Performs statistical calculations, basic data analysis and prepares reports summarizing experimental research results – 5%.

  • Assist in the general development of research protocols, modifying and implementing procedures and records. Prepares research results for communication to Principal Investigators – 5%.

  • General laboratory support, including maintaining supplies used in procedures and experimental procedures; acquires data for manuscript publication; attend lab meetings and research seminars as relevant to laboratory activities; prepare equipment and rooms for acute or chronic studies or procedures; performs other research duties as assigned – 5%. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or other related scientific field, and minimum of one year of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

  • Occasional need for flexible schedule, dependent on research needs.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent records-keeping ability and strong verbal and written communication skills. Works well in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Expertise and background in pharmaceutical sciences, pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, and bioanalytical assays including mass spectrometry, pharmacology and toxicology.

  • Excellent grasp of drug dosing and formulation procedures.

  • Preference will be given to applicants with prior in vivo biomedical research experience.
