The Chaplain serves in a non-denominational role to provide emotional and spiritual support and counseling to patients and their families.

  • Provide counseling and support to patients, families and/or significant others for emotional and spiritual issues.

  • Maintain proper documentation of pastoral visits to patients, families and/or significant others.

  • For persons of specific faiths who wish ministry from within their faith, identifies and makes referrals to appropriate and available clergy or religious leaders in the community. Serve as liaison to community spiritual groups as appropriate.

  • Organize and lead spiritual services. May organize and facilitate bereavement groups.

  • Participate as a member of the clinical team for care planning.

  • May participate as a member of the Ethics Committee, providing consultation and guidance.

  • May provide educational programs for VM staff, community clergy, religious and/or lay representatives as appropriate.


  • Completion of an accredited theological training program at the Masters level or higher, plus completion of at least two units of Clinical Pastoral Education, required.

  • Also required: Ability to counsel and support persons in crisis and illness.

  • Ability to demonstrate trust, empathy and inclusivity.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Strong skills in teaching and public speaking.

Preferred: Two years experience as a Chaplain in a healthcare environment.
