JOB SUMMARY:

SPED School Social Workers provide a continuum of programs, services and resources within the school setting to support the district educational goals and objectives to promote excellence and equity, every student, every classroom, every day. They will work with Self-Contained Special Education classes and provide supports for therapy units. The School Social Worker will, in general:

  1. Develop and maintain ongoing social work support and/or educational or social-emotional skill groups with students
  2. Consult with administrators, teachers, staff and district office personnel on general and specific situations involving concerns about students
  3. Respond to school referrals under the direction of administrators or their designees
  4. Develop and maintain ongoing parent education groups; maintain a case load of "at-risk" students; conduct home visits/home studies
  5. Serve as a school liaison for community services/resources available to students and their families

Social Worker Responsibilities Include: (This list contain tasks that are typically associated with the job. It is not all-inclusive, and may vary depending on the circumstances.)

  1. Develop and implement appropriate social work student support plans to help students develop appropriate social and academic functioning.
  2. Provide counseling services and interventions with individuals and small groups
  3. Prevention services: Implements Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies in school-wide/classroom/small group settings
  4. Identify behavioral needs of students through assessment, intervention and planning
  5. Assists in crisis intervention and conflict resolution for students, staff and families; utilize de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques
  6. Facilitates a link between home, school, and community resources
  7. Conduct home visits and provide case management to support families and facilitate parent and school collaboration
  8. Provides consultation, makes recommendations, gives appropriate advice and/or facilitates decisions regarding student needs
  9. Provides academic and behavioral interventions in a collaborative setting
  10. Develop and deliver staff training to support equal access for all students
  11. Uses evidence based research data to support the development or improvement of existing programs and utilization of resources
  12. Build positive understanding of cultural diversity while establishing inclusive relationships to students, families, staff and members of the community
  13. Give voice to the needs of underrepresented populations
  14. Continually utilize time management skills, documentation and communication skills
  15. Maintain Professional NASW Code of Ethics
  16. Knowledgeable about Multi-tiered system of support (MTSS); Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS); Special Education (IDEA) and 504
  17. Implements processes, programs and procedures in the School Social Worker role
  18. Knowledgeable about human behavior, psychological research, assessments, methods and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
  19. Compose and produce reports, documents and related materials
  20. Speak and write clearly, concisely and effectively in English; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally or in writing
  21. Identify visual or aural information, such as facial expressions, body language, physical surroundings, noises, etc... to accurately identify potential areas of concern or inappropriate activ ty.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Valid Professional Utah Educators License in School Social Work or a valid School Social Work license from another state that is transferrable to Utah.
  2. Two or more years' prior Social Work experience in K-12 education.
  3. Professional communication skills including, but not limited to: excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident, articulate, and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bi-lingual Spanish speaker; reads, writes and understands spoken Spanish
  2. State of Utah Social Work License through DOPL (Department of Professional Licensing), CSW or LCSW.
  3. Experience creating and delivering training in related areas
  4. Ability to locate, analyze and use school or student data
  5. Utilize evidence based practices
  6. Demonstrate professional, collegial and appropriate interactions throughout the work environment, including interactions with juveniles and their family members
  7. Experience in working across diverse populations and cultures
  8. Experience in public educations settings with elementary, middle and senior high school students
  9. Demonstrated competencies in assessing and treating behavioral and affective disorders

     

WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Risks found in the typical work environment which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations.
  2. Driving to work locations
  3. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work: however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, etc...
