Together, we work towards equipping each student with the tools they need to become lifelong learners and valuable contributors to both their local community and the global society.FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:Working as an interdisciplinary member of the Educational Support Services team along with other school personnel, the school social worker employs the professional skills of social work to assist students, their families and faculty. Social Work services including primary prevention and secondary intervention programs are designed to enhance students; self esteem, social-emotional adjustment, interpersonal skills development and their ability to succeed within the instructional program. School social work provides linkage, coordination and case management services for students and families with collaborative agency and community resource networks. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide multi-culturally sensitive psycho/social assessments for referred students in order to determine the nature of the problem, strengths of the student, environmental resources available to the student and the types of services needs to assist the student within and/or outside of the school setting.

  • Provide interdisciplinary consultation services to Educational Support Services team members, administrators and classroom teachers regarding student and family problems, concerns and/or needs.

  • Provide character development training for teachers and students.

  • Conduct home visits to assess and build bridges and linkages between home and school environments.

  • Provide transition strategies for students re-entering general education.

  • Provide coping strategies to declassified students and their general education teachers.

  • Design and implement character training programs for students and staff.

  • Assists school personnel in developing classroom, school, parent and community programs designed to enhance developmental understanding and student achievement.

  • Provide individual and small group counseling services for those special education and regular education students identified as requiring in-school service.

  • Provide information and referral, and where necessary, case management services to students' parents and faculty regarding human service agencies and resources appropriate to meet student needs.

  • Facilitate and/or coordinate the effective use and integration of community agencies services provided within the school setting wit students' academic and other supportive programs.

  • Provide short-term social work services to parents and families through in-school or at home counseling, referral and training programs.

  • Participate in the educational planning and review of all students identified as having disabilities and requiring the direct or indirect service of a school social worker.

  • Provide professional supervision to undergraduate and graduate social work interns as required by the Director.

  • Maintain appropriate and required professional records, documents and statistics as required for the program or school assignment.

  • Develop, implement and evaluate I.E.P goals and objectives as well as teach specific social skills to the student(s) that directly impact academic achievement.

  • Provide written feedback to parents on a student's I.E.P. goal attainment on a student report card (usually four times per year).

  • Interview a student who has alleged neglect, emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse and report incident to Child Protective Services.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Master's degree from an approved school of social work including two (2) years of supervised field work placement in an accredited agency.

  • New York State certification Certified Social Worker (CSW) and Certified School Social Worker (CSSW), LCSW or LMSW
